Option to display files and folders line-by-line

Displaying files and folders as a grid in SPL was a surprise to me, but I have tried to get used to it.
Now that I have worked with it for a while, I feel it has some definite disadvantages compared to a simple list.
- longer file and folder names are often cut off on the right. This makes it difficult to determine the version number and/or extender, which can be critical to tell files apart.
- alphabetic sorting is most helpful when it flows in one direction (usually down). When it criss-crosses the screen in multiple columns, I have to search longer to find a file by its first character.
I would really like an option (maybe in Settings?) to show files and folders line-by-line.
