iConvert 4 alpha

Post by Dutchman »

I spent a few hours debugging "iConvert 4 beta" but in the end I decided to overwrite the update code with the new version of "UpdateCirrencies.functions". See viewtopic.php?f=20&p=13687&sid=66776e8b ... 776#p13687

• The update functions are integrated together on a red background, separated by white lines
• The introduction of the "Update" function reduces the number of global variables and simplifies integration with iConvert.
• Preparation of the update (on yellow background) requires now only the set up of
- Browser if view is active, to display the web-contents
- Interface-field
This field is at the top of the display in the testprogram and gives messages about progress and errors.
Progress-messages are on blue background, whereas interactivity requests and error-messages are on red background.
• I have disabled (as comment) the code that removes html-files. The last html-file can now be used as backup and for testing. Older files could be deleted.
• A date-time stamp for the data-file has been prepared but commented because the Date-time string according to ISO 8601 becomes too long e.g. "20181112T13:21" for display in the items-list.
• A PING-command to test the website has not been used, because it returned always zero.

Code: Select all

/*
iConvert 4 Alpha
by rbytes and Dutchman, October 2018
Converts measurements in many categories.
A collaborative international project.

V4 Alpha
- Integrated with UpdateCurrencies.functions
  See https://nitisara.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=2272
- Subroutine renamed to UpdateData
  • Prepares Interactivity field and browser
  • Calls Startfunction "Update(view,iField)"
- Page change removed. Convert screen stays.
V4 Beta
- The project continues as a single integrated program.
- The Update Currencies program code is now in a subroutine labelled Update:
It and all of the subroutines and functions it calls are highlighted in yellow.

V3.6b
- now has a Settings button (gear symbol), left of the other buttons. This opens a
popup Settings window with a switch to set the view for Update Currencies V2.1
when the switch is off, the currency exchange file is updated without
  interactivity.
when the switch is on, the file is updated interactively with the user.
- file "viewstate1" stores the view setting.
V3.5b self
- Update Currencies code now embedded as a subroutine
- Fuel Economy category added by rbytes, November 2018
V3.4b
- Modified for my personal use
V3.4
- Acceleration category added by rbytes
- Update button added to launch "Update currencies.sb"
  for updating currency exchange rates
V3.3
- Flow Rate category added by rbytes
V3.2
- Angle category added by rbytes
- Energy transition category added by Dutchman
- Error trap added for Currency
V3.1
- Temperature category added by Dutchman
V3
- Currency category added by Dutchman
  DATA generated with "Update currencies.sb"
V2
- animation added to title
  (plays only once, at launch)
- measures added in most categories
- scientific notation is now used for
  results larger than 100,000,000 or
  smaller than .00000001
V1.1
- added Horsepower (Metric) to
  Power category
- eliminated >>> button;
  calculation is now automatic
  when list selections or
  input values are changed.
- code efficiency improved

I like the new layout of your alpha version, and I think it is a good idea to again have the prompts at the top of the screen.

There are a few things that don't work as expected.

1. When the Settings switch is off, I expect to see the Update occur without any inputs required. But I still get the Y/N prompts and have to respond or I can not continue using the program. Also the keyboard pops up, hiding most of the progress animation. The stop button is not visible during updates, so if I want to get out of Update without changing anything, I have to force quit the program.

2. I am getting a "Browser not found error". This happens after I shut interactive update off, quit iConvert 4 alpha and restart it to see if it remembers my switch setting. It does. I press Update and answer either y or n to the first prompt. This is the screen I get.

Maybe fixing problem 1 will fix problem 2 as well.

I have made some corrections and changes:
• In subroutine 'message:' I have changed the filename "viewstate" to "viewstate1" according to the name at other positions.
• Cleared up some remnants of the logic around the obsolete truthtable
• Added "Yes" and "No" buttons in the interactive mode so that the keyboard is not needed

There is still a mistake with the colors of the view-settings panel. They are wrong if the interactive mode was active, because other colours were used for the buttons. Richard will undoubtedly solve this quickly. I would probably have to look for it for a long time.

The updates now work as expected and seem a lot faster.

The color problem I am aware of and know how to fix. Actually it involves more than colors. After updates, you'll see that some lines and rectangles are missing from the main interface.

There is one more thing I think should be done to improve the update function. Take a look at it on your iPhone. The prompt text is very small on mine. I can't read it. Are you multiplying by the variable rh to shrink the font size? I usually use rw, because rh shrinks the size too much.

On both iPad and iPhone, with view=1, YesNoPos is used to define the horizontal positions of the Update interactive biuttons before its value is set, so it remains 0. The YES/NO buttons thus overlap at the left screen edge, and I can't press the YES button. Here is a screen shot from my iPhone X showing the too-small text and the buttons. You wouldn't have noticed the button problem if you tested a non-interactive and then an interactive update, because the first test would have set the correct value for YesNoPos

Note that Smart Basic doesn't use the entire screen of my iPhone X (and other recent Apple devices), hence the large black areas. :(

You can actually simulate an iPhone on your iPad to test for solutions. Just set iostest (near the start of iConvert 4 alpha) to 1 instead of 0. Make the changes and then set it back to 0.

Once you repost those changes I will add the color and drawing fixes and post iConvert 4.sb

I made corrections for the iPhone mode.
Furthermore, I have removed the page-change, changed some code so that the convert screen remains visible and made some cleanings.

Thanks, Ton. I will download the new code now.

Since I am writing something similar in TechBASIC for the fields of Astronomy, Cosmology, Astrobiology, Rocket Science, Physics and Quantum Mechanics for a university professor to give to his students (the copy I am writing also displays the formula as it is a teaching tool) I can take the core code and add them to iConvert if you'd like?

I'll have to remove some of the multi-algorithm conversions (it is like converting yards to feet, then taking the answer from feet and finishing off in centimeters), but it will have all the Newton, Einstein, Planck, Schrödinger conversions (using known constants like the speed of light), and the conversions of others in the space sciences field.

A note on Rocket Science, these conversations will be useful to anyone in the model rocketry hobbies (some actually use it for scientific study).

I'll have it in within 45 days as I'm finishing up the App for use in college and I'm beta testing the new version of TechBASIC as well.

Great. I'll start working on the simpler conversations as soon as I can.

However, to calculate certain Lagrange Points requires both the distance and the mass of each object. (This would calculate the point between two objects where the pull of gravity is equal). Unless there is a way to put more than one for one values, I'll have to leave that one out.

I could, using say the mass of the Earth to the Moon or the Sun, then I can put that in the drop down and provide the midpoint between two objects. (I simplified the terms so this could be understood).
