Help with quotesigns

Post by smbstarv »

I bought a new ipad, now with ios 12.1.
Suddenly my SB (v 5.8) doesn’t accept the double quote (“) nor the single (‘) any more.
The quotesigns (unlike the old ones) have an italic shape...
I don’t know what to do...
Can annybody help ?

Yes, this is a well-understood situation that has received answers many times on the Forum. A suggestion for you and others who are new to the Forum. Do a search, just as you would in a browser, using the Search this topic or Search this forum field. Often you will get many hits as to the answer.

Apple introduced something called Smart Punctuation in iOS 11. That changed the standard apostrophe and quote marks. Many of us could not understand what had happened, and feared that 11 had finally broken SB compatibility with iOS.

Not to worry. You can turn off Smart Punctuation (on by default) in Settings/General/Keyboard. Then retype any ‘ or “ that are incorrect, and all will be well.

Smart Punctuation does make text quotes look more professional, since the left and right quotes then both curl toward the “quoted text”. So if you decide to leave it on, you can still find the vertical quote and apostrophe by holding down their respective keys until you see the pop ups, and choosing the correct symbol there.

Apple at least made this easy. Just hold the ‘ or “ key down until you see the popup. Slide your finger straight up to the button above until it turns blue. Release, and you will have the standard ' or " character that works in Smart Basic code.
